A Family Guide to Ski Equipment for SSRT

Choosing equipment for Snow Summit Race Team starts with the athlete. Their program, size, and skiing abilities matter more than what an older teammate uses. The team’s material guide provides a useful starting point for a conversation with your coach before buying or renting equipment for training at Snow Summit.

The guide’s sizing ranges are coach recommendations, not an individual fitting or a guarantee that equipment meets current race rules. Confirm the final choice with your coach and have a qualified shop handle fitting, compatibility checks, and binding adjustments.

Start with the essentials

Every athlete needs a team jacket, ski poles, and a full-shell, hard-ear helmet, along with properly fitted skis and boots, goggles, gloves, and ski clothing. Under SSRT’s helmet requirements, camera mounts, spoilers, and protruding edges are not permitted. Face guards or chin bars are highly recommended; ask your coach about the appropriate setup for the athlete’s discipline.

Rippers and Shredders

For U8 and U10, the guide encourages considering rentals and gives a starting ski length between the athlete’s nose and the top of their head. First-year U12 athletes receive similar guidance. Ask whether a single versatile pair is appropriate before investing in separate race skis.

For more developed U12 racers, the guide suggests slalom skis of 125–135 cm, giant slalom skis of 145–160 cm, and boots in a 60–90 flex range. These are starting ranges for discussion, not a shopping list every U12 athlete must follow. Previous racing experience is not an entry requirement for the team.

Alpine Competition equipment

Slalom, or SL, and giant slalom, or GS, can call for different setups. The guide suggests U14 SL skis of 135–145 cm, GS skis of 160–175 cm, and boots in a 70–110 flex range. For U16, it suggests SL skis of 150–157 cm, GS skis of 175–183 cm, and boots in a 90–130 flex range.

The U18 section distinguishes women’s and men’s recommendations, and the competition sections also discuss Super G skis. Review those choices directly with the coach before purchasing specialist equipment. A ski’s length alone does not establish race eligibility; the applicable rules may also specify dimensions such as turn radius. Confirm the current requirements for the athlete’s age group and events.

All Mountain and the next step

For All Mountain, the guide recommends piste or all-mountain skis, with a starting length between the nose and roughly three inches above the skier’s head. The coach can help narrow that broad range to the athlete.
